Why PCOS affects Menstrual Cycle?

Quick Enquiry

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is the health-related issue which affects the women. The problem is caused when the hormones become imbalanced. The condition can affect the periods which means they can become irregular or they can stop completely. In this guide, we will let you know how PCOS affects the menstrual cycle.

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a health issue which affects the teen girls and young women. The problem of PCOS can result in the irregular menstrual cycle, heavy blood flow, or even period might stop. It can even result in the issue of excess hair and acne. The main reason for PCOS is a hormonal imbalance. In case, you are facing any of the symptoms then consulting the gynecologist at the right time.

Menstrual Cycle Affected by PCOS

The ovaries are two small organs which are present on each side of the women’s uterus. In the ovaries, follicles are present which hold the egg in the tiny sac liquid filled with liquid. Another name for sac is cysts. Each month around 20 eggs get mature but only one grow. Once they get mature, they travel through the Fallopian tube for a method of fertilization and ovulation takes place.

But hormonal imbalance with PCOS does not let the follicles to mature or released. However, it does not get released from the ovaries and this can be seen with the help of ultrasound. The high level of testosterone affect the menstrual cycle and it stops the ovulation. This means if ovulation is not there then uterus will not get which it needs to shed its lining.

Women with PCOS, their ovaries do not make the hormones which are needed for the eggs to develop properly. It might happen they start growing, but none of them will grow the way it needs to be. Some of them will remain as cysts. As none of the egg is released or matured so ovulation will not occur and progesterone hormone is not made. This is why the menstrual cycle of the women become irregular or it stops completely.

Irregular Menstrual Cycle

If you have PCOS, then your periods might stop or get irregular. On average, the menstrual cycle is around 28 days with one ovulation in which egg is released. However, if it’s between 21 to 35 days then it is also normal. But, if the periods are irregular then:

  • Every year there will be eight or fewer periods.
  • If the menstrual cycle is longer than 35 days.
