Oligospermia - Causes and Treatments available

Oligospermia – Causes and Treatments Available

by adminon 5 March 2019in Low Sperm Count, male infertility

Quick Enquiry

Often it is thought that the issue of infertility is only related to women. But this is not the case, there are many factors that affect the couple to conceive because of male infertility. According to current studies, it has shown that around 40% of this problem arises due to male infertility. One of the most common factors which give rise to the issue is Oligospermia. However, you can get the infertility treatment and get rid of this problem.

What is Oligospermia?

Oligospermia is characterized by a low sperm count. It means the fluid which is ejaculated during an orgasm contains very less sperm. If the sperm count is completely absent then it is called azoospermia. If your sperm count is 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen than it is considered very low. This decrease the chances of fertilizing the egg which affects the pregnancy.

Causes of Oligospermia

  • Physical causes

One of the reason is swelling of the veins which drains the testicles. Due to this, the sperm count is reduced which results in the problem of infertility in the male. There are other factors which also contribute to this issue such as infection which might affect the health of the sperm. Another reason can be scarring which results in blocking the passage of the sperm.

  • Medications

If you taking certain medications such as steroids, antibiotics and you are undergoing the treatment of cancer then it can also affect the quality and quantity of sperm.

  • Chromosome disorder

A Genetic disorder such as Klinefelter’s syndrome can also affect the male reproductive organs. There are other issues also such as cystic fibrosis, Kartagener’s syndrome, and Kallmann’s syndrome.

  • Environmental factors

Overexposure to heavy metals or chemicals such as radiation exposure or X-rays can damage the quality and quantity of sperm. If you are involved in a physical activity such as bike riding or driving then it can also create a problem.

Treatment of Oligospermia

  • Treating Infection

The doctor can prescribe some medications to cure an infection. But it will not restore your fertility.

  • Surgery

A varicocele can be repaired or corrected with surgery. In case if there is zero sperm count then sperm can be retrieved from the testicles bu using the sperm retrieval techniques.

  • Treatment for sexual intercourse problem

The issue of erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation can be improved by medication.

  • Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

To solve the problem the treatment of IVF can be used. In most cases, it is combined with IUI for effective results. With the help of these methods, sperm is directly inserted into the women’s ovaries so that it can fertilize the egg.
