IVF is a highly successful procedure that assists in several stages of conception and helps the childless couple to get their baby. While choosing this effective method of infertility treatment, women have the concern about whether IVF procedure if painful or not?
To sort out this concern of many women, we have tried to describe different stages of IVF so that they could know the discomfort level of IVF.
It is the first phase of the treatment that you will be given some medications, to begin with, the procedure and these medications are even given before the ultrasound. These IVF medications are then administered and even are injected sometimes.
These medications are injected at the specific time that is morning or at night before several days of egg retrieval. If you are mentally prepared for this treatment then this phase cannot give you any discomfort, however, due to these medicines , the patient may feel little cramping before and after egg retrieval so your nervousness at that time can make you comfortable.
After the phase of medication and before the egg retrieval, patient to asked to go for the series of ultrasounds so that complete examination of the patient can be done and the progress of the IVF process can be monitored. There can be some vaginal ultrasounds that can make you feel a bit unpleasant but do not give any pain.
Before the egg retrieval patient can be asked for a blood test and these blood draws may continue after IVF and till the test of pregnancy. Most of the patients do not feel any pain during these blood draws but if someone has a phobia for needle then it can be a bit uncomfortable phase for them.
Egg collection can be a painful phase for you as it is like the minor surgery. However, during this phase patient is given some sedatives still it can be bit uncomfortable phase. During the process of the egg retrieval ultrasound probe is inserted into the vaginal canal for the removal of follicles or egg sacs directly from the ovaries due to which patient may feel uncomfortable.
To make this phase comfortable, medication under the proper administration of the doctor has been given due to which the patient may feel that she is in a dreamlike state and even she won’t have any memory of retrieval.
If the patient gets nervous during this step of the IVF procedure then oral anti-anxiety medication can also be given to the patient so that her nerves can be calmed. After the completion of this step, the patient may feel cramping and bleeding for a few days. Thus it can be said that it is the most invasive step of the IVF treatment.
This step is less invasive than the egg retrieval as it is similar to the vaginal ultrasound as through the inserted vaginal probe developing embryo has been transferred for successful implantation and pregnancy.
Thus IVF is not a painful procedure but certain steps of this treatment can give you some discomfort which is purely depended on the nervousness or mentally preparation of the patent.
