What is Azoospermia, its Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

by adminon 6 October 2016in male infertility

Azoospermia is a common male infertility problem in men that is referred as lack of sperms in semen. The problem is noticed in 5% of infertile males and is related with:

  1. Lack of sperm development
  2. Obstruction in sperm production, even if normal semen cannot have sufficient of sperms

Azoospermia Diagnosis

However there are no adequate sperms are received in the semen but there are usually significant sperms are present in testis, as not the whole sperms produced in the testis come out in semen.  If the critical magnitude of sperm development is not fulfilled, there are still mature sperms present in testis that hardly ejaculate.

Azoospermia Assessment

A complete evaluation of medical issues, earlier surgeries, medication and genetic evaluation is performed to determine the possible causes of azoospermia. The blood tests are performed to testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone. Two semen samples are taken. Standard semen analysis is conducted.

A small count of sperm in the pellet analysis is crucial as:

  1. It refers that complete blockage is noticed
  2. Men can use ejaculated sperm to become parent with assisted reproduction and prevent sperm retrieval procedures.

Causes

Azoospermia can be caused by reproductive tract obstruction or insufficient development of spermatozoa as it is not visible in ejaculateion. This condition is diagnosed depending on the unavailability of sperms of perfect structures. Medical history and hormonal analyses are performed to find the cause of azoospermia.

  1. Testis failure
  2. chromosome microdeletions
  3. Genetic infertility caused by abnormal chromosomes
  4. Unknown reasons of infertility
  5. Unknown gonadotropin deficiency
  6. Varicocele
  7. Pituitary suppression
  8. Testosterone supplements
  9. Anemia
  10. Problem in vas deferens
  11. Ejaculatory duct problems
  12. Vasectomy

Azoospermia Treatment

In case of absence of sperm in semen, a physician will provide information on the medical options for diagnosis. The treatment is limited to unavailability on the basis of genetic defect.  For testicular failure, physicians may be limited to curing the condition with hormonal medications. Obstructive azoospermia may be treated with surgery to eliminate the blockage.

Natural Treatment

Practically, there are a few treatment options for azoospermia. Initially, it is essential to get assistance of a doctor who is specialized in this condition. A male needs different nutrients to maintain the hormone balance and healthy sperms. In males who need to treat azoospermia, a diet enriched of nutrients is crucial.
