Azoospermia - Semen Without Sperm copy

Azoospermia – Semen Without Sperm? Causes and Treatment

by adminon 15 July 2019in Low Sperm Count

Quick Enquiry

Many men are stuck with a condition which causes them to produce semen without sperm. It might go unnoticed till the man tries to impregnate his female partner and fails to do so. The condition causes infertility in 15 % of men. According to the IVF centre the condition is one of the leading causes of infertility. No Sperm Treatment should be carried out at the earliest to prevent problems in the future. Many techniques are available for low sperm count treatment.

Causes of Azoospermia

There are many causes of Azoospermia. For knowing the detailed causes, first, we need to understand the types of Azoospermia. There are mainly three types of Azoospermia:-

Pretesticular azoospermia: It refers to the condition in which the testicles are normal but the manufacturing of sperm is not taking place as the hormone levels are low. It might also be happening due to the effect of chemotherapy.

Testicular azoospermia: It refers to the condition of no production of sperms due to injury to the testicles. Damage to the testicles can harm the production of sperms. It might be due to infection in the reproductive tract. The condition of cancer and its treatment can also be a   cause. Genetic conditions like Klinefelter’s syndrome may also contribute. A Groin injury in the past may also be one of the reasons.

Post-testicular azoospermia: This condition occurs when testicles make normal sperm but they are prevented from getting out due to certain obstructions. Vasectomy is one of the leading causes.  Another condition called Retrograde ejaculation is also a factor which could contribute to the condition. It is a condition in which the semen retrogrades into the bladder instead of getting ejaculated out of penis. 40 percent of men suffer from this condition.

Determination of Azoospermia

The condition might not be evident until you try to impregnate your partner. If you want to find out if you are suffering from the condition, then you will have to get the semen sample tested.

A complete physical exam is also carried out by the doctor to ascertain if you have the condition.

Certain blood tests and hormonal level tests will also be carried out to determine your hormonal levels.

Treatment of Azoospermia

In the case of the obstructive type, surgery is the best option. It will yield better results if the blockage is relatively recent.

In the case of non-obstructive azoospermia, Sperm retrieval may work if the person does not want to undergo surgery.

This is done by using a needle to withdraw sperm from the testicles. The sperm can be frozen for later use in IVF technique.
