Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in Women & Treatment

by adminon 10 April 2017in female infertility

It is completely a new term to many women and a few of those who know about it are able to tell every detail about this peril. There is no good in PCOS rather than bringing its complications, side-effects and above all infertility.

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

It is an endocrine disorder where a woman starts producing more male hormones (androgens). This hormonal imbalance leads to many changes in the body and the end result is infertility. Estrogen and Progesterone are the main hormones that are necessary for reproduction in a woman. Once these hormones are in deficiency, a woman will experience irregular periods which makes it hard for her to conceive. A study shows that 2 women in 20 suffer from PCOS and they are in the childbearing age. This problem affects the ovaries of a woman that are responsible for the development of eggs necessary for fertilization.

The cause of PCOS in Women

The actual cause of PCOS is unknown, but a number of factors are to blame.

  1. Genetics

It is believed that PCOS run through the blood and if at all a mother or any other female member suffered from PCOS, this problem may affect the ones to come

  1. Insulin levels

The food that we eat must be broken down and converted into energy to empower us to carry out our daily activities. Glucose is what is formed from the food and is absorbed into the cells with the help of insulin. If the insulin levels are low or unhealthy, there will be an increase in the sugar levels in a woman. This is a common issue with women affected with PCOS

  1. Low-grade Inflammation

In case the white blood cells are not effective, the body will not be able to fight infections and other threats which make it possible for the ovaries to stimulate androgen production in the body

  1. Environmental factors

These include stress, unhealthy habits like smoking, and poor nutrition might be the other causes of PCOS

Symptoms of PCOS in Women

The symptoms of PCOS normally vary from one woman to another. In some women, it can be noticed from the first time of their menstrual periods. Many times the symptoms depend on the severity of the PCOS otherwise many may not get them in the early stages which require frequent checkups.

  1. Hirsutism

It is where there is excessive hair growth in a woman, especially in the facial region, arms, and the legs.

  1. Menstrual irregularities

This is when a woman loses track of her periods or miss periods

  1. Male pattern hair loss

It may start as thinning of hair and only increases

  1. Anovulation

It is when the ovaries fail to release an oocyte during the menstrual cycle of a woman

  1. Acne or pimples

The breakout becomes more than it was.

Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

There are different diagnostic measures taken by a doctor, especially judging from the signs and symptoms that a woman is faced with. During the consultation period, the doctor observes the body weight of the patient, menstrual cycle as the woman may detail it and the medical history. Other diagnostic methods include the following;

  • An Ultrasound

A Transducer is used to get images of the woman’s reproductive system including the ovaries. It is placed in the vagina and emits waves that create images a screen. The ovaries and the thickness of the lining of the uterus are the major targets.

  • Blood Tests
  • Blood is removed from the patient to carry out the following tests
  • Fasting glucose tests to measure the blood sugars are carried out
  • A glucose tolerance test to measure the glucose levels
  • Triglyceride levels and fasting cholesterol tests
  • Thyroid function tests

  • A pelvic examination

A doctor looks at the reproductive organ of the woman to find any possibility of an abnormality or infections.

The effects of PCOS on a woman

Women with PCOS always have to deal with a number of effects psychologically and physically. The high levels of androgens in a woman lead to acne and menstrual problems. These are stressful and can lead to depression.

Women with PCOS also have to deal with insulin and its resistance in the body. It occurs after the insulin can no longer support the glucose utilization in the body. It leads to diabetes in the long run

Acanthosis Nigricans a body condition where dark patches develop on the skin is also another effect of PCOS in women

Unable to conceive due to the fact that there are menstrual irregularities and anovulation

PCOS can also lead to endometrial cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Treatment of PCOS

PCOS treatment in India is done in the following ways

  1. A laparoscopic ovarian diathermy and gonadotropins

A laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive method used with gonadotropins to stimulate ovulation. It helps a doctor to remove the cysts from the ovaries.

  1. A Bariatric surgery

This is normally used in the case of extremely obese PCOS patients.

  1. Assisted Reproduction Techniques

These include IVF, ICSI, and GIFT. In these procedures, the sperms are and the eggs are collected from the man and woman respectively, and joined together in a dish for fertilization. The embryo is transferred back into the woman’s uterus for development. Tests, patient follow-up, and monitoring must be done.

  1. Metformin

It is used to treat and correct insulin levels in PCOS patients. It makes the body become more sensitive to insulin and regulate the glucose levels in the patient. In the end, it improves cholesterol levels and reduces the chances of Type 2 diabetes

  1. Weight loss and better nutrition practices

Cutting down weight through physical exercises and having healthy meals is recommended in all women with PCOS, especially the extremely obese patients.

  1. Clomiphene Citrate

This treatment can also help to stimulate ovulation and pregnancy. It is normally taken in smaller doses at first and increase as the doctor may recommend. It can be taken in the form of tablets or injections.

PCOS Treatment cost in India

It has no clear or actual cost to be pointed at, but the cost normally depends on the treatment selected. It also goes in hand with the hospital and the doctor.

by adminon 6 October 2016in male infertility

Azoospermia is a common male infertility problem in men that is referred as lack of sperms in semen. The problem is noticed in 5% of infertile males and is related with:

  1. Lack of sperm development
  2. Obstruction in sperm production, even if normal semen cannot have sufficient of sperms

Azoospermia Diagnosis

However there are no adequate sperms are received in the semen but there are usually significant sperms are present in testis, as not the whole sperms produced in the testis come out in semen.  If the critical magnitude of sperm development is not fulfilled, there are still mature sperms present in testis that hardly ejaculate.

Azoospermia Assessment

A complete evaluation of medical issues, earlier surgeries, medication and genetic evaluation is performed to determine the possible causes of azoospermia. The blood tests are performed to testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone. Two semen samples are taken. Standard semen analysis is conducted.

A small count of sperm in the pellet analysis is crucial as:

  1. It refers that complete blockage is noticed
  2. Men can use ejaculated sperm to become parent with assisted reproduction and prevent sperm retrieval procedures.

Causes

Azoospermia can be caused by reproductive tract obstruction or insufficient development of spermatozoa as it is not visible in ejaculateion. This condition is diagnosed depending on the unavailability of sperms of perfect structures. Medical history and hormonal analyses are performed to find the cause of azoospermia.

  1. Testis failure
  2. chromosome microdeletions
  3. Genetic infertility caused by abnormal chromosomes
  4. Unknown reasons of infertility
  5. Unknown gonadotropin deficiency
  6. Varicocele
  7. Pituitary suppression
  8. Testosterone supplements
  9. Anemia
  10. Problem in vas deferens
  11. Ejaculatory duct problems
  12. Vasectomy

Azoospermia Treatment

In case of absence of sperm in semen, a physician will provide information on the medical options for diagnosis. The treatment is limited to unavailability on the basis of genetic defect.  For testicular failure, physicians may be limited to curing the condition with hormonal medications. Obstructive azoospermia may be treated with surgery to eliminate the blockage.

Natural Treatment

Practically, there are a few treatment options for azoospermia. Initially, it is essential to get assistance of a doctor who is specialized in this condition. A male needs different nutrients to maintain the hormone balance and healthy sperms. In males who need to treat azoospermia, a diet enriched of nutrients is crucial.

For obese men, following the weight loss program is essential to improve the sperm production.

What you should know about Ovulation to naturally get pregnant easily

by adminon 15 September 2016in Uncategorized

What is Ovulation?

Every female has different ovulation and menstrual cycles from another female. Ovulation is a stage when your eggs are ready to get fertilized. As soon as they are fertilized, a female gets pregnant. A female is fertile at the maximum level just 2 – 3 days before ovulation. Knowing your day of ovulation, you can set the time of intercourse to increase the chances of conceiving a child.

Surprising factors about ovulation:

  1. Uterine lining thickens in order to get ready for the egg cell that will connect to the uterine walls. A egg is removed from ovary and moves down towards fallopian tubes to the uterus to interact with sperms in case they are present there.
  2. If egg is not fertilized, it is dissolved then the thickened uterine lining is removed through period.
  3. A female is born with about two million immature eggs present in her ovaries that remain throughout her life and among of which only 300 – 500 become mature.
  4. Intake of birth control pills obstructs ovulations. The hormones present in these pills prevent the release of eggs from ovary so sperms do not get eggs to fertilize.
  5. An egg’s age is only 4 to 12 hours after it is released from ovary.
  6. Ovulation occurs about 11th to 14th days of a female’s period so around two weeks before her period starts.

How to track ovulation

  1. The best way to track your ovulation is to count back. Track the patterns of your body temperature and mucus discharge for one or two cycles. After a few days of ovulation, your basal body temperature increases.
  2. Some females also experience mild pains in the abdomen when the time to ovulate is near.
  3. The best method is to test your hormone levels by using ovulation prediction kit.

What is Cervical Mucus?

by adminon 14 September 2016in female infertility

Cervical mucus has a significant role in conceiving process by nurturing and securing sperm as it makes the long, arduous journey by female reproductive tract to find the egg. Once you get to know about your cervical mucus, you become able to know about to conceive during sexual activity.
The best way to find changes in your cervical mucus is to gather and assess a mucus sample on a regular basis. The following factors describe the typical progression of the cervical mucus quantity and quality to observe your menstrual cycle:
When Menstrual Period is Over– The cervical mucus is minimally produced right after your period. However it is released after some days and has a sticky touch.

When Ovulation date is near– When you approach your day of fertile window, cervical mucus’s quantity increases as well as moistness.

During Ovulation– At the times before ovulation, the development of cervical mucus is at the maximum level that its color is whites like an egg. After finding the presence of this color mucus, you will be familiar about your highly fertile days.

Subsequent Ovulation- The magnitude of released cervical mucus reduces significantly subsequent to ovulation and becomes thicker than during ovulation.

But after assessing variations in cervical mucus, you realize that you eventually do not develop cervical mucus of fertile level during ovulation. It is in fact thick and sticky rather being thin and extensible at the time of ovulation. In this case, your efforts to get pregnant may not work because it makes it tough for sperms to move properly to reach fallopian tube to interact with egg in order to result into fertilization that is essential for conceiving.

It is a costly procedure and females may face some side effects caused by medicine. IUI costs $500 per cycle. Costly and surgical procedure. IVF costs $15000 one cycle.
Fast and easy procedure Complicated procedure
Insertion of concentrated sperms is a painfree procedure Female becomes pregnant is a painful procedure
An accurate time to insert sperms in females is quickly before and after her menstruation IVF is based on age factor and causes of infertility in females
Females at their 30s experiencing unknown infertility receive 8% higher chances for about three cycles, 12% higher chances with injectable FSH and insemination for about three cycles, and 55% higher chances after single IVF cycle. High pregnancy rates
The chances to become pregnant are based on meeting high number of sperms with eggs. The success is mainly based on couple’s age and the infertility type. Pregnancy chances are based on IVF lab standards, age and fertility problems
